Dogs play an interesting role in our society these days. Dog obedience training is now expected of our furry friends. They live in our houses, walk our sidewalks beside us, play with our children in the front yard and visit their doggie buddies at the dog park. They are expected to be on their best behavior at all times. This is a lot to ask of an animal!

Many years ago, dogs held a different role. Most likely, our parents grew up with dogs who didn’t know what a leash was! There was always the scary dog who lived in the neighborhood and children knew to petal quickly by that house on their bicycle! Dogs may have lived outside – all the time. Tell that to today’s dog who attends doggie daycare 3 times a week and wears designer collars!

Today, the role dogs play in our lives and societies has changed (that scary dog in the neighborhood is no longer accepted as “just being a dog”, now the owner would have to deal with neighbor complaints, city fines and legal issues if the dog ever bit someone). It is the dog owner’s responsibility to make sure their pup has the skills to be a good fit in our homes and communities.

Situations Where You Want Good Dog Behavior

There are some activities that you and your dog participate in where having a certain level of dog obedience training is not only convenient, but expected. Such situations are:

Daily life; walking a dog, having him or her in your house, interacting with family members and people who come over to your house.

Competition sports such as: agility, dog shows and flyball.

Volunteer programs such as visiting nursing homes, hospitals or schools.

Emergency situations, such as when outside and the dog’s collar comes off or their leash breaks or gets dropped.

Why Getting Obedience Is Sometimes Difficult

The primary reason dogs and people misunderstand each other or have trouble communicating is because we are two very different species and we do not speak the same language. The one thing we do have in our favor, however, is that we both seem to have an affinity for each other. Basing our relationship on the fact that we enjoy each other’s company means that we need to find an effective way to “talk” to each other. Because we are the people in the relationship (unless of course your dog can read and is the one reading this!) it is OUR responsibility to ensure we are being clear when we communicate with our dogs.

Before starting out dog obedience training, it is important that we recognize the difficulty involved in this for our dogs.

easons why training may be difficult for our dogs:

They are trying to read us and figure us out. As a human, we can make their job a little easier by being as consistent and clear in our instruction as possible. Reward good behavior, ignore or redirect incorrect behavior.

Dogs are under exercised and under stimulated. Asking a puppy, who has been in their kennel for a few hours while you were at work, to be calm once they are let out is an impossible task for them. It is not physically possible for the dog, therefore we can not expect it. If we want a calm dog, we need to give them exercise and energy outlets.

They may never have been taught training. Dogs become more savvy to training the more practice they get. Be patient with a dog who is a novice. If your training is clear, your dog will make progress.

Dogs do have minds of their own and we have to respect and understand that. If a dog is showing signs that training is difficult for them, analyze what may be the cause. Sometimes the dog is in physical discomfort; therefore the “sit” behavior may hurt them. Other times there are distractions such as kids, good smells, or other dogs. Imagine if you were trying to concentrate on your teacher, but someone kept waving a piece of chocolate cake or plane tickets to Hawaii in your face… it would be hard to remain focused on the teacher!

Every dog can learn. It is up to us, as the human who has specific expectations of our dog’s behavior, to help them understand what we want. We need to be patient, clear and understanding.

How to Achieve Good Behavior

If you are having trouble with dog obedience training, you will likely find that seeking the help of a professional dog trainer not only provides some great tips and suggestions, but provides a lot of fun for you and your dog! Dog training is actually a highly developed skill that involves deep understanding and the study of psychology. Just like bankers are good with numbers and plumbers are good with pipes, dog trainers are good with dogs. It is commendable that if you don’t have the knowledge to train your dog that you seek the help of someone who does. You certainly wouldn’t try to work on your water pipes if you knew nothing about plumbing! The same goes for our dogs and the way they learn.

A dog trainer who uses positive training techniques will encourage their clients to utilize treats and praise when teaching the dog good behavior. Because the behaviors being learned are brand new behaviors, it is important to give the dog rewards for doing them until the behaviors are very consistent. Once the desired behaviors are known very well by the dog, the use of treats can be used intermittently. Using positive training techniques is good for our dogs, good for us as people (the traditional ways of training where we used physical force to intimidate our dogs into acting a certain way doesn’t reflect very kindly on us!) and good for the bond we share.

Just remember, the saying that “an old dog can’t learn new tricks” simply isn’t true! Every dog can learn dog obedience training that will help them become better members of our homes and societies.

Cats eyes have often been used in horror films. But as a pet owner, you will know that the cats stare is really the complete opposite of what is portrayed in films. That is why cat eye care, is so very important for you to know.

How do cats say I love you? well this is through their eyes, of course. This is why you should never be frightened by there gaze. So how does this work? First of all, the cat stares at you for a long time. And after that, it blinks its eyes slowly. Some people call this the cats kiss. But you should also know that this is your cats way of showing you that it loves you.

But how do you return the favor? This is easy, all you need to do is follow your cats lead. Stare at it for a long time and then slowly blink your eyes. See? Cats eyes have also be used for romantic films as well.

Do not believe the horror films you see. Cats do not and never have had a third eye. Their eye sight is really far better than a humans. Instead of a third eye, what cats have is a third eyelid. This is called a nictitating membrane.

This inner eyelid protects the eyes of the cat from harm and also from dryness. You will always notice that when a cat is sick, this membrane will be some what closed. This should always alarm enough for you to call your vet or get your cat to them fast as possible.

But this third eyelid will also show once a cat is happy. So you will know what kind of mood your cat is in just by looking at the membrane.

You should always observe the pupil of your feline friend. A change in size of one of the pupils can often be an indication of an inflammation. It can also be a sign of a kind of a neurologic, disorder, this is called Horner’s Syndrome. Or worse, it can also indicate tumors or injuries in the central nervous system.

Never believe what others say that cats are color blind. They do see some colors. They may not see them as clear as human do, but its not true that they cannot see any colors at all.

Cats can also see clearly over long distances. There vision is very different from peoples. There vision will blurry if they are looking at objects that are very close to them.

Yes it is true, cats do have the nocturnal vision. But they can not see in complete darkness. Do you see the muscles on their iris that surround the pupils of their eyes? They are constructed in a way that it narrows into a vertical split when they are exposed in the bright lights. And it opens fully when they are in a quite dim light.

This feature of the cat may be traced back to their roots. They can use this feature to hunt for food during the night, that is if they were left out in the jungle or left with no one to care for them.

So you must forget about the horror movies that you have seen. Now it is time to put some effort into your cats eye care. Never let a minor ailments worsen. Always call your vet immediately when you think there is something not right or amiss. You do not want your cat to lose their sight or even worse lose their lives. Just remember it is always better to be safe than blind.

Looking after your pet’s oral hygiene is a primary responsibility of any pet owner, so begin your cat tooth care today instead of waiting for next February. In case you are wondering why February is mentioned, it is because two mega associations, The United States American Veterinarian Medicine Association or the AVMA, and the American Veterinary Dental Society or the AVDS, have decided to do something special during this calendar month.

These two groups tagged what used to be the month for romance as the Cat Dental Health month where they both target and carry out steps in preparing pet owners like you on how to care for the oral needs of your family pets every day. These two reputed groups know how vital it is to take good care of the oral requirements of your family pets. Their big focus is to dedicate a month in the year for the oral care of your pet, whatever that pet may be.

Did you know that approximately 85 percent of mature pets have dental diseases? Did you also know that this is one of the most common causes of health related problems with cats? If you don’t pay attention to those periodontic ailments, more problems may surface. If not properly treated, harmful elements like bacteria from the oral cavity can spread throughout the bloodstream. This in turn could infect other essential organs and ultimately lead to the death of your beloved cat.

As the owner you should be cleaning your cat’s teeth daily. This may not be practical to do by yourself, so utilize another household member to gently hold open your cat’s mouth so you can then clean its teeth comfortably. Your furry friend may not like the procedure at first but it is for their own good. If your cat has their claws, you’ll want to wear some protective clothing while they get accustomed to the process. Starting this as a kitten is best as then it’s not a big thing. If starting later in your cat’s life, both of you will have to get accustomed to the process. To make it a little easier for your cat, try using a fish flavored toothpaste. It’s prudent to be in touch with your vet regarding the dental care of your family pets. When visiting your vet, they will check your cat’s gum and teeth to provide any additional recommendations, if required.

Oral care for your cat should begin at an early age to prevent future ill health as the cat grows older. If you have endured painful teeth, you can imagine the pain your cat must be going through when there are tooth issues. If left untreated, your cat could be prone to heart, lung, liver and kidney problems. Effective tooth care would help to ensure that your cat grows older gracefully and in sound health. By doing what is necessary, you are preparing your family pets to have a more comfortable life as they age.

With respect to anatomy, dog’s ear are different from human ears. Unlike human ear, dog’s ears have extra turn and length that makes the visibility and medication rather difficult, making your dog susceptible to infections which is one of the most common problems.

Among the several factors that causes dogs ear problems are; ear design that is some dogs have short ear, some have long pendulous ear, while others have thick hair in their ear. Second is the humid climate that encourages the growth of parasites, bacterial and yeasts. Next factor is the long exposure to other infected pets and lastly the dogs that can swim are prone to ear infections.

To keep your dog free form ear infections you need put your minimum effort that will surely avoid major ear problems.

Follow the instructions as recommended by your vets. If you get the slightest hint of bad odor then do ear cleaning with warm water, mineral oil, hydrogen peroxide, or a combination of equal parts of vinegar and rubbing alcohol but make sure that your dog does not have open sores that will have a burning sensation. You are also recommended to apply pet ear care product that cleans and dry up excess moisture in the ear canal after bathing or swimming. Pet ear care product containing Tea Tree Oil will keep the ear canal of your dog dry and problem free. There are also pet ear cares products available for routine ear cleaning that will dissolve wax, remove foreign debris and dry the ear canal. Even home dog care treatments are also available that can kill ear mites and ear ticks. Even though your dog’s eardrum is better protected than a human beings, but the process of cleaning should be done with precise care especially when you are inserting cotton-tipped swabs into the ear canal. There is the possibility of the dirt and other foreign matter to get pushed deeper and even losing the cotton tip in the ear canal if not handled properly. Use a long cotton-tipped swab since a dog’s ear canal is much deeper than ours. Using the same cotton ball or unclean tip of ear cleaning solution in another dog’s ears or even in a dog’s other ear will surely spread disease. Therefore always remember to use a new cotton ball or wipe clean any applicator tips. Another method of cleaning involves filling the ear canal with a pet ear cleaning solution followed by gentle massage of the outer ear. After a few minutes the dog is allowed to shake his head to help clear the ear canal. Removal of excess hair by trimming the hair.

Dog training provides your dog with important lessons. They can save his life and they can protect you, your family, your neighbors and your household items.

Sadly, many dogs end up at the local pound because they never learned how to adapt to life within human society. This is often because owners don’t know proper dog training methods. When their dogs seem unable to make the transition, owners feel their only alternative is to let the dog go.

This doesn’t have to be the case for you. All it takes is knowing the right dog training techniques that work, how to apply them effectively and where to look for help.

One of the first lessons is for you.

Make dog training fun and enjoyable for you and your dog. That way, neither of you will become stressed or frustrated. Remember that dogs pick up on your emotions, the energy you emit. If you become tense, your dog becomes upset too. In this state, he is confused and unable to learn.

It takes time for a dog to learn and retain what he’s learned. He might succeed admirably on your first training session, but the next day he’s just as likely to have forgotten it. He might seem to have it down for an entire week or more and then fall back into his old habits.

He has a lot to learn in his youth. Because a dog’s natural instincts are far stronger than any training you might apply, it’s easy for him to slip back at this early stage.

This is a normal part of dog training, but it’s not impossible to overcome. Simply reassert the training as a refresher course. Don’t think that he just can’t learn, because he can. He proved it by getting it right the first time.

Puppies love to play and interact with humans. While this is fun to observe and experience, it can present a problem during training. For an especially exuberant puppy, make extra effort to calm him whenever he loses focus.

You can do this by helping him expel some of that energy. Chase him around the yard, toss the ball, play tug-of-war, and anything else that will drain him. After about 15-20 minutes, or when you see he’s slowing down, take a 5-minute rest and then begin the dog training.

Keep your training sessions short, especially at the beginning. He’ll learn much better if you keep each lesson to under 10 minutes. Take a break, an hour or so, and start again.

Here are 7 basic dog training tips that will make training fun for you and your dog.

1. Seek out trained professionals. They can shorten the learning curve for you and your pet by using only the most effective dog training methods. No guesswork, just results. Refer to any of the great dog training books that are available for proper techniques.

2. Use positive reinforcement during the dog training sessions. Negative reinforcement, such as hitting your dog, can bring the opposite results to what you’re trying to achieve. As well, negative punishment can make your dog fearful and even aggressive.

3. Make it fun! Dog training doesn’t have to be a gruelling task. Dogs love to please their owners, so if the learning environment is relaxed and fun, your dog will learn much more easily.

4. Use small treat rewards to help make the training enjoyable. Choose a special treat to use only for the training process when your dog has completed a lesson correctly.

5. Choose appropriate training products. Speak to your dog trainer or pet store professionals for advice on the proper product for your specific needs. For basic training, you need the right collar and leash, which can be a clicker collar or one of the different types of harnesses.

6. Remember that it will take time for your dog to absorb and understand your dog training lessons. Allow him the time he needs but also remember to reinforce each lesson by using the same methods every time. This will help his retention.

7. Know when to change your teaching method. While you’ll want to stick to one method, it must be one that actually works. Try different methods until you find one that gets the results you want, and then continue to use that method.

Once you see some results, you’ll realize that dog training can be a rewarding experience.

You could consider it an art form or special talent reserved for people like you who have the envious ability to connect with their dogs on a unique level.

Done well, dog training is like poetry in motion.

Cats are clean creatures. If you have ever seen a cat licking its fur, you have witnessed it self-grooming. Cats are able to keep themselves groomed, as they expel as much saliva as they do urine. This saliva cleans fur of dirt and particles. If you wish to assist your cat in grooming, there are several things you can do.

Cat grooming by humans is best accomplished when a cat has been introduced to this at an early age. They will be use to the attention, and will allow you to attend to the grooming tasks without much fuss. The grooming tasks will basically consist of brushing their coat and trimming their nails along with an occasional bath.

Brushing a cat’s fur accomplishes several objectives. It will help keep their hair clean, tangle free and shiny. It will help you to bond with your cat, and also give you the opportunity to check for fleas, ticks, and other parasites. In addition, it will help to reduce shedding, along with possible hairballs, which can cause digestive problems. Brushing should be done on a daily basis.

Nail clipping is a little trickier than brushing. A cat’s nails need to be kept trimmed. A scratching post is an excellent investment that can help with the task, and save your furniture from being used for the same purpose. When clipping the nail, make sure not to cut the vein or quick in the paw, as this is very painful for the cat. You should try to keep the cat as still as possible. Rewarding this behavior with treats should help. If you have a problem with the nail clipping, you can always get some help from a professional groomer or your veterinarian.

Cats with shorthaired coats need little or no bathing. If you have a cat with a longer haired coat, then this grooming task should be done every one to three months. A sink is a good place to accomplish this routine. First wet the cat, shampoo with a pet shampoo for the cat’s coat and a tearless baby shampoo for his face. Two shampoos will be required for a normal coated cat, while a longer coated cat will require three. Rinse with a mixture of vinegar and water. Keep in mind, although they are groomers themselves, cats do not like baths. It is best to make it as pleasant and quick as possible. When done, dry thoroughly with towels and put the cat in a warm room. If he tolerates it, you can even blow-dry his coat on a low setting. And if your cat objects to being wet, you can purchase cat shampoo in powder form, which doesn’t require rinsing.

Three tasks are basically all you need to do to keep your cat well groomed. Performing these tasks also presents you with an ideal opportunity to give your cat the once-over. Check his ears, mouth, nose, and eyes. This will help you detect any abnormalities or physical problems. And remember, a clean cat is a happy cat.

A vital part of dog training is use of a crate, or kennel. It is most important to crate train puppies at a young age. Crate training satisfies a dogs need for a den-like enclosure. Dogs evolved from wolves, which have lived in packs and dens for hundreds of thousands of years. Having a crate taps into this desire that all dogs have inherited from their ancestors. On top of being good for the dog, it is also an effective housebreaking tool, and it helps to teach the dog that it is located at the bottom of the family pack hierarchy.

The best time to start crate training a dog is whenever they are puppies. A dog that is crated as a puppy is will be more comfortable in a crate later in life. This is useful when a dog has to travel in a confined space, such as a car.

When you first start crating a puppy, it is sometimes necessary to throw treats in the crate. Some puppies are naturally afraid of getting inside a crate. However, if they often find treats at the bottom, this fear will quickly go away. Be sure to praise and reward your puppy when it goes in the crate. You may also want to start crating for short periods of time until the puppy gets more used to being in such a small, confined space.

Along with treats, it is also important to have some type of toy or bone for a dog chew on. This will help to satisfy the dogs natural predatory instincts while it is in a crate. Bones and chew toys can also help to improve the dog’s dental hygiene.

There are a few other things to keep in mind when putting a dog and a crate. Make sure that the crate has a sufficient water dispenser. You’ll also want to make sure that a dog’s collar is removed. If there are any loose hanging loops around a dogs neck that can get caught on the crate, it can cause a choking hazard. If a dog’s collar gets caught on a crate, it can twist and turn and cause strangulation.

Crates are supposed to be a safe haven for a dog. They are there to help you keep control of your dog whenever you are unable to let him roam around the house, and they helkp to satisfy a dog’s natural den instinct. For these reasons it is important to never use the crate as punishment.

Following these crating guidelines will help you along in your dog training path. But you should consult a more complete and thorough dog training resource, like the ones found at http://www.dogtrainerpro.info before taking your dog training any further.

If you have a dog, you need to be aware of the different techniques that can be used to properly train your dog and teach him how to be very well behaved. All dogs are perfectly capable of becoming well behaved. There is some important dog training information that you should know if you want to train your dog properly.

You can choose to send your dog to a dog training school. There are many options available when it comes to courses and schools. Some schools are more expensive than others, so do your research but expect to pay a decent amount to have your dog trained by professionals. Most schools have the same goal: to properly and efficiently train your dog. Most schools also offer courses based on the level of training and age of your dog. That being said, some schools specialize in particular areas of training. If you have particular needs for your dog, make sure to ask.

Most dog training courses last up to ten weeks. Puppies normally attend puppy training school, which is similar to a dog preschool that lasts approximately six weeks. Most dog training courses include a test at the end of the course. In order for your dog to successfully complete the course and graduate from the dog training school, he must past this test. Your dog must be properly trained to pass as these tests can get quite complicated. After your dog finishes several weeks of hard training and passes the final tests, he will be able to show off his newly acquired skills to all your friends and family members. You should be delighted with the training results that training schools provide. After all, there is a reason why these schools are so confident and proud of their graduates!

If you’re looking at significantly improving your dog’s training and persona, then dog training schools are definitely an option that you should consider. They will also make you really happy, proud and thankful to have such a wonderful dog that was trained by professionals. You will have to spend money to get that kind of training but it will be worth every penny you spent. Feel free to use the Internet and talk to professional dog trainers to find out more about training dogs and dog training schools. You can never have too much information about it…

The Commands That Every Dog Owner Should Know And How This Will Lead To A Happy, Clean And Obedient Dog That Will Not Cause Problems

There are of course many reasons for owners to want a calm, obedient and faithful dog. For one thing, obedient and trained dogs are happier dogs, less likely to get into tussles with people or with other dogs. Another reason is that many communities require that the dogs living in their neighborhoods be well trained. This is especially true for many breeds thought to have aggression and behavior problems – dog breeds like pit bulls and rottweilers for instance.

And of course, training your dog well will also make he or she a much better family companion, especially in households where there are young children. Many studies have shown that proper dog training makes a big impact when it comes to cutting down the number of dog bits and other behavior problems encountered by dog owning households.

When considering training your own dog, or having someone else help you train it, there are certain basic commands that must be mastered in order for a dog to be considered truly trained. These basic commands include:

• Heel – it is important that any dog learn to walk beside its owner on a loose lead, neither pulling ahead nor lagging behind

• Respond to the word No – the word no is one word that all dogs must learn. Training your dog to respond to this important word can save you a ton of trouble.

• Sit – Training your dog to sit on command is a vital part of any dog training program.

• Stay – A well trained dog should remain where his or her owner commands, so stay is a very important command in dog training.

• Down – Lying down on command is more than just a cute trick; it is a key component of any successful dog training program.

• Off – Forms the basis for later training, especially when training the dog not to chase people, cars, bikes, cats, etc.

Dog training does much more than just create an obedient, willing companion. Training your dog properly actually strengthens the bond that already exists between dog and handler. Dogs are pack animals, and they look to their pack leader to tell them what to do. The key to successful dog training is to set yourself up as that pack leader.

Establishing yourself as pack leader is a very important concept for any potential dog trainer to understand. There is only one leader in every pack of dogs, and the owner must establish him or herself as the dominant animal. Failure to do so leads to all manner of behavior problems.

A properly trained dog will respond properly to all the owner’s commands, and will not display anxiety, displeasure or confusion. A good dog training program will focus on allowing the dog to learn just what is expected of it, and will use positive reinforcement to reward desired behaviors.

In addition to making the dog a good member of the community, obedience training is a great way to fulfill some of the dog’s own needs, including the need for exercise, the security that comes with knowing what is expected of it, a feeling of accomplishment and a good working relationship with its handler. Dog training gives the dog an important job to do, and an important goal to reach.

Giving the dog a job is more important than you may think. Dogs were originally bred by humans to do important work, such as herding sheep, guarding property and protecting people. Many dogs today have no important job to do, and this can often lead to boredom and neurotic behavior.

Basic obedience training, and ongoing training sessions, provide the dog with an important job to do. This is especially important for high energy breeds like German shepherds and border collies. Training sessions are a great way for these high energy dogs to use up their extra energy and simply to enjoy themselves.

Incorporating playtime into your dog training sessions is a great way to prevent both yourself and your dog from becoming bored. Playing with your dog helps to strengthen the all important bond between you – the pack leader – and your dog.
