Scratching posts should be a staple item for every household with pet cats and cat catteries as well. The scratching post should be sturdy so it does not fall over when the cat uses it. It should be tall enough so the cat can stretch upward to scratch and made of material the cat likes.
Location of scratching posts:
They should be placed next to an area where the cat already scratches Put scratching posts near sleeping areas, entrances to rooms and long routes to food and litter box (I might add a little note here about the three silver Persians I have now. They must be pure angels or I am just accommodating them very well. They are all three very well behaved. I am having no behavior problems from them. They seem at peace and full of contentment.)
Another important aspect of making your cat feel at home, welcome or happy during the day is providing adequate resting areas. Resting areas must be:
Safe Secure Private Away from people and other animals
Cats especially need opportunities for privacy and quiet time. They sometimes are willing to use a cat tent and other special made items for them, however, many cats enjoy just a cardboard box with a nice soft blanket placed in a quiet spot for them. Cats also find their own very secluded places for private time that includes:
Under your bed In a spare room In a closet
And what about perching needs for the cat? Cats love to perch in areas way up high, on a window sill looking outside to the rest of the world while they are quiet, secluded and safe inside. Cats are curious and vigilant by nature. Sitting in high places allows them to observe their environment. They like to see, hear and smell what is going on from a safe distance.
Cats make good use of their vertical space and value this as much or more than floor space. They may even find their own high perching spots on top of a bookcase, kitchen cupboards or a refrigerator. Spots near a window are especially desirable. Try to provide places for birds to gather near the cat’s window perch. They love to watch the birds fly around. There are many types of cat furniture that accommodates the cat’s need to climb and perch. Cat towers, trees or condos are dearly loved. Place them near a window if possible.
The need for play is unique to each cat. Some cats like to play more than others. Play activities are closely related to hunting activities. Watch the types of games your cat likes to play. Recently I bought a little bird toy for my cats. Each time the bird is rolled around it makes a bird-like noise. I thought how cute this would be for them. They will just love this toy. It is the only toy so far they all stay away from. They seem to be startled by the sound, so they do not go near that toy bird. Other cats, by contrast, may love it. All of them are amazed at jumping feathers and love to run after them (the hunt), then catch them with their hands and try to “eat” the prey of feathers. I play this game often with them using the fishing poles with feathers attached on the end. Cats have a need to stalk and pounce. They stalk the feather and pounce on it. There are many other types of cat toys that dangle and move. I am staying away from toys that make noise as my cats are startled by the noise makers.
I notice my Persians have their eyes half closed a lot. They look a bit lazy and sleepy eyed. Their environment is extremely quiet. I put on the Van Morrison music one day to see their reaction. Their eyes popped open very wide as if to say: “What is that?” “I never heard such as this.” Taz ran in behind something to hide. Diamond was the perkiest. I concluded Diamond really liked Van Morrison’s song of “Brown-eyed Girl.”
When you purchase cat toys, be sure most of them provide opportunity for the cat to play by itself. Cats are easily bored (sounds like me), so keep a selection of toys you can rotate occasionally. When I clean their area, I put all their toys in a basket. After cleaning, I get them out and they act as if they have found “new” toys. In a few hours, the toys just lay on the floor untouched. The cats returned to sleepy-eyed look!
Diamond and Fairy like the low-tech items like ping-pong balls and different shapes of little balls. They roll them over their floor using their paws. I have also noticed these two girls as if playing “roll the ball over the floor to each other.” This is real cute to watch and I never have my video camera out in time to catch these little games.
Taz is still not old enough to mate, but he spends a fair amount of his time following around after Fairy during her season times. When he is not doing this, he desires to sit next to me or in my lap. He is more of a lap cat than Fairy and Diamond. They all learn very quickly and as I said before, I am so very pleased with this threesome. I have heard that Persians were very hard to groom. This is not true of my three. Their coats are silky texture. The most trouble I have had is at bath time and keeping their faces clean. I won’t give away all my secrets in these articles. I have found a miracle routine for cleaning their faces. All who purchase kittens from me will receive the “miracle routine” grooming instructions I have learned and established with my particular lines. Keeping your cat indoors is the safest option. It helps to:
Protect from trauma Attacks from other animals Infectious diseases
Even though indoors in the best place for your cat, indoor life can also contribute to boredom and stress that might result in medical and behavior problems. There are steps cat owners can take to provide an interesting indoor life for feline companions.
Try to think of your cat as a guest in your home. Realize just a few preparations will make the cat feel welcome and happier. First of all, try to understand your cat’s physical, mental and emotional needs. For further information, please follow the link in the resource box to my Persian cat site. On this site you will find helpful articles about every aspect of caring for and living with cats. Bookmark the site as I will be adding information continuously. On this site, I will also be exploring other members of the cat family such as tigers and lions that will help you to understand the natural instincts of the cat.
Cats are not herd or pack animals. They evolved as solitary hunters of small prey and spent much of their day in pursuit of food. Other portion of their time was spent establishing, marking and defending a territory. Free-living cats lead very busy lives. Our domesticated cats lead fully indoor lives, which removes the need to find food and patrol territory, but does not eliminate their daily need for stimulation and activity that involved finding food and patrolling territories. So you can imagine how much “extra” time our domesticated cats have on their hands each day living indoors with us.
Most of us realize the cat’s basic indoor needs of food, water and a litter box. What we might not realize is certain mental and emotional needs. These include:
A place to scratch A place to rest A place to perch above the ground Some interaction with toys to mimic the hunting of prey
The mental and emotional needs of a cat call for an informed and understanding owner. For example, scratching is a natural feline activity that helps cats exercise their muscles, shed the old outer layers of their claws and mark their territory using both scent-based and visual sings. Scratching is a cat’s instinctive behavior. This urge to scratch will vary from cat to cat as does preferences of location and other materials. You will need to experiment with different scratching devices to see which your cat or cats prefer. Some prefer horizontal surfaces, others prefer vertical. Observe your cat to see what his or her preferences are and then accommodate them with the appropriate scratching devices. I notice my Diamond and Fairy like vertical scratching areas, and my male, Taz, seems to do very little scratching. As you observe your particular cat, you will learn how to communicate with them and what they are saying to you.
A funny story about my Taz is with the addition of a new girl, Diamond, she has been teaching the others it seems more games to play. Taz would sit in my lap and roll around and try to grasp hold of my hand or arm with his paws, then very lightly and almost in question start to bite. At first, I was a little alarmed and of course I told him this was absolutely out of the question. He could not bite “mommy.” After a few rounds of this, Taz suddenly jumped down from my lap, ran across the room, jumped upon one of the climbing trees, slapped at the little bird hanging there, then grasp hold of it with his paws and starting biting it. Then he ran back over to me, jumped up in my lap and looked straight into my eyes. I felt like he was saying: “I only want to wrestle and play with you.” “I am not trying to hurt you.” And I do believe this is what he was communicating with his actions and body language. I notice Diamond has been wrestling with Taz and Fairy, so I concluded Diamond taught Taz this new game.

The number of house cats is increasing. More and more cat owners are deciding that it’s no longer safe for their cat to go outside unsupervised; cars, other animals, poisons and malicious people are just some of the reasons.
Indoor cats can lead very happy lives, but they do need to be entertained more than outdoor cats. If house cats aren’t stimulated enough, they’ll get bored and may become stressed or exhibit cat behavior problems such as scratching the furniture and ignoring their litter box.
Here are 8 tips for keeping your house cat happy and entertained:
1. Make sure he has plenty of cat toys. He should have toys in every room. To add interest, split his toys into two or three batches and rotate them every few days.
2. Get him some good cat furniture. A scratching post is a must. Two or three in different areas of the house is even better. If you can afford it, cat trees and cat condos are great for entertaining house cats. If you’re on a tight budget, you can make a cat condo using boxes, carpet, logs etc.
3. Use catnip. If your cat likes catnip, sprinkle it around his scratching post, bed and other favorite areas.
4. Provide seats for your cat near windows. Cats love to watch what’s going on outside, and to sit in the sun. Window views at garden or street level are likely to provide more entertainment than those at higher levels in the house.
5. Grow some cat grass in a pot. This is a good substitute for eating grass outside.
6. Get a DVD specifically made for cats. Yes they do exist! Some cats love them and some aren’t interested, but they’re relatively cheap so it’s worth a try.
7. Use a computer screensaver with swimming tropical fish. Some cats love this – it’s like ultimate cat TV.
8. Teach your cat to walk on a leash. This does take some time and patience, but if you can do it you can then take your house cats outdoors in total safety.

Do you like to learn about new and interesting things? If so, this article will be right up your alley! A healthy animal makes for a happy pet. If you are a cat owner and you want to make your pet happy, you need to make sure that your cat is groomed properly, fed on time and is given enough love and attention.
Here are some tips on how you can have a healthy and happy cat:
1. Take care of your cat’s health.
As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to make sure that your cat is healthy and free from diseases that may even be transmitted to humans.
Visit the veterinarian if you notice that your cat has become lethargic or less active than usual.
If you see them ’shedding’ excessively or has something unusual on their coat, immediately consult a professional.
Your cat might have a skin disease, or this could be a symptom of a sickness that you do not know about.
2. Groom your cat properly.
Cats are in the habit of grooming themselves. You will often see them using their tongue to clean their coat.
In spite of this, you should still do your part in grooming your cat if you want to keep them really clean.
Brush your cat’s fur regularly. There are several short-haired cats that need minimal brushing. For this, you can use a comb with soft bristles.
There are also cat breeds which have long, silky furs and this variety needs a much longer grooming time.
Use a wide-toothed comb initially then brush up with a fine toothed one afterwards. You can also use talcum powder in order to separate the hair strands.
Make sure that you brush with gentle strokes so that their skin will not be hurt or scratched.
Cats are also not that fond of taking a bath. But there are times when your cat would need bathing.
This is when they have accumulated a lot of dirt on the skin and coat. Bathing will help eliminate ticks and lice.
Also, there might be substances that could cling on the fur which can be poisonous and it is important for them to bathe.
When bathing your pet, use a shampoo that is specially made for cats. Prepare the following before bathing:
-a small tub or sink
-slip-proof mat
-water spray attachment
-clean, dry towels
-shampoo
-comb
Adjust the water temperature, then place your cat in the small tub or sink before filling it up with water. It is better to attach a sprayer in the faucet rather than pouring water directly onto its body. Apply a liberal amount of shampoo on the cat’s body, and try to avoid the face, especially the eyes and ears.
After rinsing, towel them dry and comb the coat. Bathing time should build trust and create some quality time between you and your pet cat.
This should prevent your cat from making much of a fuss the next time it needs a bath.
Another part of grooming is keeping the eyes, teeth and ears clean. Also remember to keep the paws clean and the nails trimmed.
Go to a pet store and you are sure to find products specially made to clean these parts. You can also look for a nail trimmer specifically designed to use on your pet cat.
Ask a professional groomer or a veterinarian so that you can learn how to properly clean your cat’s eyes, ears, teeth and nails.
3. Feed them on time.
Another aspect of keeping your cat happy and healthy is by feeding them well and on time.
Your feline friends can learn how to “stick” to a schedule with your guidance and training.
Make time in your busy day to feed them. You can learn which variety of cat food they prefer by serving different brands and variants.
Along with cat food, you should give them plenty of clean water to drink.
If you have a lot of pet cats, give them individual feeding plates.
If there is just one dish, other cats might not be fed well because dominant felines will take the most part of the food that you serve.
4. Shower them with love and attention.
By giving your cats your undivided attention while grooming and feeding them, you are already showering them with love and attention. In addition to this, make their play time a lot more fun by appreciating the things that they do.By following these tips, you are sure to have a healthy cat and be a contented owner. When we learn, we continue on a path of growth. Therefore, learning about this subject has already helped you more than you know.
